Education Subject regulations
The subject encompasses a broad range of topics that reflect the far-reaching nature of the field. Educators are interested in how knowledge, skills and values are constructed, accumulated, and conveyed through formal and informal means.
The qualifications listed below are not Initial Teacher Education programmes. See the Teaching subject.
Education is available as a minor.
To complete a minor in Education, students must complete 60 points from the papers listed under the subject Education or Māori Education, including at least one of EDSOC101, EDUCA110 or HMDEV100, and at least 30 points above 100 level.

Cert(Ed) The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Certificate. Papers should be taken from those listed for Adult Learning, Digital Learning, Education, Education and Society, and/or Human Development.

Dip(Ed) The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Diploma. Papers should be taken from those listed for Adult Learning, Digital Learning, Education, Education and Society, and/or Human Development.

GradDip(Ed) The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Graduate Diploma. Papers should be taken from those listed for Adult Learning, Digital Learning, Education, Education and Society, and/or Human Development.

PGCert(Ed) The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate. To complete the PGCert(Ed), students must take 60 points at 500 level from the Education subject.

PGDip(Ed) The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma. To complete the PGDip(Ed), students must take 120 points at 500 level including at least 90 points from Lists A, B and C.
The List A papers are: DINST521, EDLED501, EDUCA506, EDUCA560, EDUCA561, EDUCA562 and MAOED523.
The List B papers are: COUNS540, COUNS546, COUNS549, DINST522, DLRNG500, EDSOC500, GLOBE500, HMDEV500, LLTED522, LLTED523, MAOED501, MAOED502, MAOED503, MTHED500, and SCTED512.
The List C papers are: EDUCA500, EDUCA557 or MAOED500.
Within the Postgraduate Diploma, a specialisation is available in Māori Medium Teaching/Te Ropu Tohu Paerua.

MEd To complete the Master of Education, students must take 180 points at 500 level including at least 30 points from List A; up to a further 90 points from Lists A and B; one of List C; and one of List D.
The List A papers are: DINST521, EDLED501, EDUCA506, EDUCA560, EDUCA561, EDUCA562 and MAOED523.
The List B papers are: COUNS540, COUNS546, COUNS549, DINST522, DLRNG500, EDSOC500, GLOBE500, HMDEV500, LLTED522, LLTED523, MAOED501, MAOED502, MAOED503, MTHED500, and SCTED512.
The List C papers are: EDUCA500, EDUCA557 or MAOED500.
The List D papers are: EDUCA591 (30 pts), EDUCA592 (60 pts), EDUCA593 (90 pts) or EDUCA594 (120 pts).
Students with two or more DINST papers may change to a Master of Disability and Inclusion Studies.
Students with two or more EDLED papers may change to a Master of Educational Leadership.
A Master of Education in Counselling Studies is also available, see the Counselling Studies subject entry in the University of Waikato Catalogue of Papers for details.
Within the Master of Education, a specialisation is available in Te Rōpū Tohu Paerua.
Up to 30 points may be selected from outside the field of the degree.

EdD The Doctor of Education is a three-year full-time or six-year part-time professional doctorate in education for experienced education practitioners who have a strong academic record and who want to develop their profession through research.
Students in this programme complete two parts.
To complete Part 1 of the Doctor of Education, students must complete EDUCA980 and EDUCA990; and at least 60 points from EDUCA981, EDUCA982 or EDUCA983.
To complete Part 2 of the Doctor of Education, students must complete EDUCA994. EDUCA994 EdD Thesis critically investigates an approved topic of substance and significance, demonstrates expertise in the methods of research and scholarship, and displays intellectual independence. It makes a substantial original contribution to the research area and is of publishable quality.
