Inspired by watching true crime television shows, Tasmin White embarked on a Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Criminology with a minor in Psychology. Her studies revealed criminology couldn’t be further from the big screen portrayal, but she says her time at Waikato has driven her desire to gain a deeper understanding of criminal behaviour.
Tasmin (Ngāti Koroki Kahukura), says she enjoyed the opportunity to explore Māori experiences of the criminal justice system in her study assignments. “I am fascinated by how individuals process the system and their experience of being in it. Also, the systemic reasons of how they have ended up where they are and the disproportionate disadvantage Māori experience.”
Tasmin says she appreciated how supportive and flexible her lecturers at Waikato have been. “I would recommend Waikato. The lecturers treat you more like an equal and it’s a more personalised experience.” Tasmin’s long-term goal is to find a role in the New Zealand Police or within New Zealand’s criminal justice system.
