Purpose
The Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship was established in 2005 and named in honour of New Zealand’s greatest adventurer. The Scholarship is for well-rounded individuals who display strengths in three key pillars:
- academic achievement
- strong sporting or creative and performing art abilities
- leadership potential.
Recipients (Hillary Scholars) are supported on the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme, to excel in academia and leadership while continuing in their sport or creative and performing art. Up to 25 scholarships are awarded each year, each with a total value of up to $30,000.

Eligibility
This scholarship is for school leavers who are intending to enrol full-time (120 points) in an undergraduate degree in 2025. Applicants must have achieved NCEA Level 2 with Merit (or equivalent) and must show exceptional leadership qualities and be actively involved in community initiatives. Applicants may be taking a gap year in 2024, but must have achieved a minimum of Merit (or equivalent) at both NCEA Level 2 and NCEA 3.

3-minute video
Please note that all applicants are required to submit a 3-minute video of themselves as part of the online application process. This video should outline why you believe you should be considered to be a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar and what it would mean to you. You will need to provide the link to the video in the space provided on the online application form and it must be accessible to all, i.e., the link must be able to be shared with everyone.
