About
The Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning is a recognised qualification for those working in tertiary education contexts who wish to extend their understanding of tertiary learning and teaching, improve their own practice and facilitate positive change in student learning across their courses and programmes or in their specific areas of work.
It is a flexible programme that can benefit people engaged in tertiary education teaching at any point during their career. The programme can be completed over 1 - 4 years, depending on individual preferences and needs. You can enrol in single papers, or combine four papers for the full qualification.
Through the PGCert(TertiaryT&L) programme, participants will have opportunities to improve their own teaching, research teaching and learning, critically engage with theories and principles of tertiary teaching and learning, contextualise their own practice locally, nationally and globally, and be prepared to take responsibility for leading teaching and learning initiatives at an appropriate level.
The PGCert(TertiaryT&L) requires successful completion of four elective papers. It can be taken in blended form or completely online.
All blended papers will be offered in Hamilton and Tauranga subject to sufficient student numbers.
Entry requirements:
- a Bachelor's degree
- current engagement in teaching or facilitation of learning in a tertiary environment

2025 Trimester A
This paper examines principles and methods of creating learning environments and approaches to ensure inclusion for all members of the diverse student and staff population.
This paper covers a wide range of theories, principles and methods of assessment applicable to participants' own tertiary teaching contexts.
This paper examines the internationalisation of teaching and learning from theoretical and practical perspectives, focusing on participants' own experiences and disciplinary contexts.
This paper allows the participant to better identify pathways of success for Pacific learners, through an introduction to Pacific pedagogies which can be utilised to assist them to design better learning experiences for their students.
2025 Trimester B
This paper provides an introduction to Kaupapa Māori as an indigenous knowledge framework, and encourages examination and evaluation of existing learning programmes in terms of bi-cultural integration.
This paper outlines theoretical models and explores ways of adopting online pedagogies in a tertiary context. The paper gives learners experiences and competencies to develop practical learning skills in adopting these for online, blended and flexible delivery.
This paper provides an outline of the main trends in global higher education, considering how they impact tertiary institutions in general and our own professional positions and practices in particular.
2025 Trimester D
This paper explores concepts and elements of digital literacy, within an overall concept of literacy, identifying those which are important and relevant in participants' own disciplines and their tertiary teaching contexts.

2025 Trimester X
This paper enables participants to explore core concepts of teaching, learning and assessment and develop the knowledge and skills for effective teaching in tertiary teaching contexts.
This paper introduces selected practical issues and contemporary theoretical perspectives in postgraduate supervision, with a focus on participants’ own experience.
This paper offers participants the opportunity to examine a specific area of tertiary learning and teaching, with learning outcomes and content agreed by the participant and paper convenor.
Staff Fees Concession
University of Waikato staff
A staff fees concession (SFC) is available to full-time or part-time staff at University of Waikato.
Casual employees and those employed for a period of 12 months or less could be eligible for SFC if you are applying to study the Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning. You must consult with your Line Manager to confirm your eligibility.

Note that you can apply to enrol in the PGCertTERTL paper/s and the SFC concurrently.

Wintec and Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology staff members are also eligible for the SFC. You must discuss your proposed study with your Line Manager and once approved, please obtain the SFC form from your respective HR or People and Capability Team.
