Student Engagement
The evaluation team at Waikato University have investigated a number of methods for increasing response rates for the end of semester evaluations. The most successful method so far has been running evaluations in-class, in a manner similar to the old paper evaluations. Teaching staff contact students in advance to suggest bringing a web-capable device to class, and students spend a small portion of the class completing the evaluation for their paper. For NET and blended papers, we suggest using a Moodle “lesson” to provide students with an opportunity to provide feedback and a selection of material to assist them in completing the evaluations.
Below are some of the more exceptional increases in response rates from S & A semester in 2018, using the first version of the plan.
- 300-level paper, A semester 2017: 16% - same paper, A semester 2018: 86%
- 100-level paper, S semester 2017: 18% - same paper, A semester 2018: 83%
- University overall response rate: Semester A, 2017: 19% - Semester A, 2018: 33%
Face-to-face papers
Evaluations for face-to-face papers can be conducted during class. Because the B Semester evaluations are open for 6 weeks, students who who do not attend the class are still able to provide feedback. It is the Class Reps' responsibility to run the evaluation so please contact your Class Rep about arranging a date for the evaluation to be completed. The B semester plan: face-to-face classes link below takes you to a suggested plan which outlines the best way to use evaluation resources. More information can be found under In-Class Evaluations.

NET & Blended papers
Evaluations for NET & blended papers can be set up through Moodle via the "lesson" activity. For information about how to do this, see Adding an evaluation lesson to Moodle.
