Anthony (Shermi) Perera earned a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Civil Engineering at the University of Waikato, where he maintained top grades and received three scholarships.
Now working at Beca in Dunedin, Shermi contributes to the Southern Water Resources team, engaging in diverse engineering projects.
Shermi’s degree included work placements and strong support from lecturers, helping him apply engineering principles in real-world scenarios.
“My lecturers ensured I understood engineering principles and their real-world applications, and now I’m using these concepts and theories in everyday life.”
He was an engineering ambassador, tutored Water Engineering papers, led the Young Engineers Society, and completed a notable capstone project on heritage building restoration, which led to the development of an educational app for building owners.
“I’ve always advocated for the University of Waikato because it offers the best education and opportunities,” Shermi says. “Studying close to home was a no-brainer."
