Student Health is only for students currently enrolled at the University of Waikato.
Can I stay with Student Health if I’m no longer a student?
We encourage you to register with a new clinic/doctor after completing your studies. This helps us meet the demand of new students registering with us.
If you are an enrolled domestic student at the University you can register with us as a patient to qualify for low-cost and some free services. You can still be seen on a casual basis if you choose not to register with Student Health. The fees for casual patients are much higher than patients who register with our practice.
How to register
You can register at any time and it is free. Complete an enrolment form at reception in the clinic or send your completed online form to medcent@waikato.ac.nz
- Complete this online enrolment form if you want to register as a patient and pay less.
- Complete this casual enrolment form if you want to stay with your current practice.

Can't wait for a routine appointment?
Call reception and ask to speak to a nurse who will assess your concern over the phone and arrange a same day appointment if it is urgent.
Doctor and Nurse Practitioner appointments
Our team of General Practitioners (GP) and Nurse Practitioners (NP) provide the same general practice services as other family doctor/medical centres.
Nurse Prescriber appointments
Registered Nurse Prescribers are designated to prescribe from a limited list of medicines to treat common conditions. Some examples include diabetes, asthma, hayfever, skin infections, acne, eczema, chest/throat/ear infections, UTIs, STIs, and contraception.
Nurse appointments
Appointments are available for health advice, sexual health checks, cervical smears, vaccines, injections, wart treatment, accidents and more.
A routine doctor’s appointment is for 15-minutes. Phone reception to ask for a longer appointment (at no extra charge) to allow for enough time if you have multiple things or a complex issue to discuss with your doctor. A longer appointment is also recommended if you have a mental health concern.
You can ask for a phone or video consultation if that is more convenient. It is recommended to have had at least one in-person appointment with your clinician here at Student Health previously.
There are limitations with telehealth such as not being able to carry out a physical examination. We take your health seriously so if your concern cannot be dealt with safely through telehealth, we will ask you to come in for an in-person consultation or seek medical attention locally.
Tips to make the best of your telehealth appointment
- choose a quiet private place with good lighting where you won’t be disturbed
- take a few minutes to get ready for your telehealth appointment
- check your device is charged and connected to the internet - wifi is best
