Examinations and procedures
Learn when exams are held, understand examination procedures, materials and how to review your grades.
The 2025 B Trimester examinations will extend from Monday, 20 October to Friday 31 October 2025 (including Saturday 25, October)
Please note that this will exclude Monday 27 October – Labour Day.
Examinations are conducted under the Assessment Regulations which can be found in the University of Waikato Calendar.
It is preferred that a current student ID is presented at the examination, however, any current photo ID is accepted e.g. passport, drivers licence.
If you cannot show your student ID or some other acceptable ID (a current passport or a photographic drivers licence) when you sit an examination, you will be required to fill out a "No ID" form at the start of the examination, at the end of the examination you will be escorted to the Student Centre where staff will verify your details. Your grade for that paper will be withheld until this process has been completed.
You should be ready to enter morning examinations at 09:15 and afternoon examinations at 14:15. You can enter the examination room up to 45 minutes after the doors open (i.e. until 10:00 or 15:00). After those times, contact the Student Centre. You may not leave an examination during the first 45 minutes of writing time (i.e. 10:15 or 15:15) or the last 15 minutes. You must obtain the Examination Supervisor's permission to leave the room before the end of the examination.
Children are not allowed in the examination room.
In open book examinations, you may bring in any reference material.
In restricted book examinations, you may bring in only reference material specified by the examiner.
Spare paper, text books, study notes, calculators, electronic dictionaries, and computers may not be brought into the examination room without authority in writing from the examiner.
Cellular/mobile telephones, pagers and other communication or storage devices, including wearable technology such as smart watches, are prohibited from the examination room.
Students should not write on any part of their body before the exam, because this could give rise to suspicion that the writing is an attempt to circumvent assessment regulations.
Students bringing unauthorised or prohibited materials into the examination room may face disciplinary action under the Student Discipline Regulations that may affect their examination result. Cheating in any matter connected with assessment is prohibited.
For reasons beyond your control, if you miss an examination or your performance during an examination has been seriously impaired, you may apply for Special Consideration through your MyWaikato Results Tab. You must consult a registered medical or dental practitioner, midwife, psychologist or counsellor as soon as possible, but within five working days of each examination affected. You must submit your application within five working days of the examination(s) affected.
Due to exceptional circumstances beyond your control, you cannot sit your examinations at the scheduled time or place, you may apply to sit your examination at another time or location. You should not make any arrangements until your application is approved. There is a $50 administration fee and if your application is approved, you will be responsible for all costs related to sitting and arranging the examination.
If you have a permanent learning or physical disability, you may apply for Accessibility Arrangements for examinations. You must provide a completed Needs Assessment Form completed by a registered medical practitioner or clinical psychologist regarding your disability. You may apply for a review of grade if you consider that a mistake has been made in the process of calculating or determining the grade for a paper, once you have received your final results for S Trimester (Summer School), A Trimester, B Trimester or full-year papers.
A review of grade involves a re-marking of all original items of assessment that contribute to the final grade (including the examination script, if applicable), and a re-calculation of marks. As a result of the review your grade may be left unchanged, raised or lowered.
