Schedule
Day One - Wednesday, 16 October 2024
2:00pm - 2:15pm | Welcome to the Engineering Design Show
3:00pm - 4:00pm |
Civil Engineering (Yr2) - Timber Pedestrian Bridge Civil Engineering students have been tasked to design and build a two-metre pedestrian bridge which can support the weight of two users at the centre but fail at the addition of a third. |
Outside The Pā, front of the wharenui
4:00pm - 5:00pm |
Mechanical Engineering (Yr3) - Fence post machine challenge Engineers frequently need creativity to solve problems within various constraints. This year's task for third-year Mechanical Engineering students is to design a machine that races to place fence posts in pre-made holes and return, with the fastest and most accurate machine winning. |
Front of bleachers in The Pā
5:00pm - 6:00pm |
Mechanical Engineering (Yr2) - Innovative Nutcrackers Second-year Mechanical Engineering students must design and manufacture an innovative macadamia nutcracker that isn't a copy of existing designs. Prototypes should be user-friendly and reliably crack the nut without damaging the kernel, with testing to occur at the Design Show. |
Front of bleachers in The Pā
Chemical Engineering (Yr2) - Chem-E Car Chemical Engineering students must design and build a car powered by chemical reactions that can carry a 500g load up to 30m, with the distance revealed on competition day. This challenge tests their ability to model and predict the energy released from chemical reactions to drive the car. |
Outside The Pā | ||
6:00pm - 7:30pm |
Mechatronics/Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Yr2) - Smart
Mechatronics (Yr3) - Self balancing robots in maze |
Te Kōpūroa |
Day 2 - Thursday, 17 October 2024
2:00pm - 4:00pm |
Mechatronics/Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Yr2) - Smart Autonomous Vehicles Display & demonstration.
Mechatronics (Yr 3) - Self balancing robots in maze |
Te Kōpūroa |
4:30pm - 5:00pm | Student Awards Ceremony
5:00pm | Closed for private function |
Each year, our students excel in designing, building and testing new products, structures and solutions in response to real-world problems that matter to people, both in New Zealand and overseas. Waikato proudly boasts a full complement of professional engineering degree programmes, underpinned by Engineering NZ accreditation, offering an excellent choice for students across New Zealand eager to pursue a career in this exciting and growing industry.
Every year we have a two-day schedule packed full of exciting competitions, pitches and presentations, not to mention all the fascinating final year projects in strategic areas such as robotics and automation, energy and food, advanced materials, structures and infrastructure, geotechnical engineering, smart electrical and AI, and water and wastewater challenges.
