Global programmes

The University of Waikato has a long and proud history of collaborating with global partners to deliver quality education programmes offshore.

The University of Waikato was the first New Zealand university to be approved to teach and award three of its degrees in China through our Joint Institute (NZUWI) in Hangzhou, China. We have joint programmes in China and Vietnam, pathway programmes with partners in a number of countries.

The University of Waikato Joint Institute at Hangzhou City University (NZUWI) – Hangzhou, China

The Joint Institute is the University of Waikato’s flagship offshore programme. From our purpose-built facility, NZUWI offers three complete undergraduate degree programmes to students in China:

    • Bachelor of Business in Finance
    • Bachelor of Design in Interface Design
    • Bachelor of Design in Media Design

The courses are delivered by the University of Waikato staff and staff from Hangzhou City University (previously known as Zhejiang University City College – ZUCC and the Chinese name is 浙大城市学院), which gives students a University of Waikato learning experience without leaving China. Students have the opportunity to undertake short-term study in New Zealand if they wish.

Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) – Shanghai, China

At SISU, students can take the 2+2 pathway programme. The SISU programme boasts University of Waikato staff delivering a number of courses in the Programme. After 2 years of study at SISU, students transfer to the University of Waikato with up to 120 points of credit exemption towards Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Sciences. The collaboration began in 1995 and is the University of Waikato’s longest-running programme in China.

Hebei University of Science and Technology (HEBUST) – Shijiazhuang, China

The University of Waikato contributes to undergraduate Engineering programme delivery. Students can transfer to the University of Waikato and complete 180 points under BSc to gain a degree from both institutions.

National Economics University (NEU) – Hanoi, Vietnam

The University of Waikato, in partnership with National Economics University, deliver the Bachelor of Business programmes for students in Vietnam. Currently the Programme is available in two majors:

Students are enrolled with the University of Waikato and enjoy all the support offered to students at National Economics University. The programme can be completed entirely in Vietnam but students have the opportunity to undertake study in New Zealand as part of their degree programme if they wish.

Hainan University (HNU)

In 2023 the University of Waikato launched a new Joint Programme with Hainan University in China.

Students study towards a Bachelor of Science (Computer Science). Students can complete their studies without leaving China and earn bachelor’s degrees from both the University of Waikato and Hainan University. Students have the opportunity to undertake study in New Zealand as part of their degree programme if they wish.

3+1+1 Programmes – China and Thailand

Students complete three years of undergraduate study at a global partner university, transfer to the University of Waikato for one year of study abroad, and then have the option to complete one more year to gain a Waikato Master’s degree.

Guaranteed Credit Agreements – South, East and Southeast Asia
